Interview with Jennifer Hubbard - Author of The Secret Year!

I recently had the opportunity to interview Jennifer Hubbard, author of The Secret Year! I've read it, and all I can tell you is that it's certainly one to put on your list for 2010.

Before we get to the interview, here is the description from Goodreads, for those of you who are unfamiliar with The Secret Year:

Seventeen-year-old Colt has been sneaking out at night to meet Julia, a girl from an upper-class neighborhood unlike his own. They’ve never told anyone else about their relationship: not their family or friends, and especially not Julia’s boyfriend. When Julia dies suddenly, Colt tries to cope with her death while pretending that he never even knew her. He discovers a journal she left behind. But he is not prepared for the truths he discovers about their intense relationship, nor to pay the price for the secrets he’s kept.

1. Congratulations on the release of The Secret Year! How does it feel to actually see your labor of love published and in the hands of readers?

Thank you! It is wonderful to have the book out there. At the same time, it’s a new experience to have my work discussed on the internet by people I’ve never met. I enjoy the email I’ve received from readers.

2. Did you write other novels before The Secret Year that didn’t survive the path to publishing?

Absolutely. I think this true of most writers. Most of my early projects were not yet good enough to be published, and didn’t make it past a first or second draft. I learned to write a novel by practicing!

3. Your main character, Colt, is a sixteen/seventeen year old boy dealing with intense emotions that he has to keep to himself. Was it difficult to find his voice, especially writing outside of your own gender?

No, his voice was there from the beginning, and I never considered writing from any other point of view. Having grown up with male friends, reading male writers, having a father and husband and stepson in my life, a male voice doesn’t seem foreign to me. When I look at my writing, about half of my first-person narrators are male and half are female. Honestly, I don’t even feel that the primary filter of my own life is one of gender; I feel like a person first.

4. What are your interests outside of writing? Do you ever feel guilty ignoring writing too long to do something else, or vice versa?

I like walking and hiking; I make sure to do that every day. I like reading, traveling, music. No, there’s never enough time for everything I want to do, but I believe that’s true of most people. In a way, it’s a nice problem to have: there are so many things I’m interested in, that I want to do, the trouble is finding time for them all.

5. Many of us follow Nathan Bransford’s blog, and even participated in the contest he hosted to promote The Secret Year. What’s it like working with one of the blogging community’s favorite literary agents?

Nathan’s blog is a great mix of practical advice and an entertaining style. Of course, blogging and building his client list are only one part of what he does as an agent, most of which is behind the scenes—the career planning, the negotiations, etc. I’ve been very happy with him, and I think we work together well.

Thank you for your time, Jennifer. It was a pleasure!

Something to Look at Sunday

I love cold weather. I really do. But I think the time has come to say goodbye. Who's ready for those Spring flowers?! Who's ready for the warmth of the sun on their cheeks? Who's ready to embrace those seasonal allergies with a new box of Calratin and a bottle of Sinex?!

In the words of Spongebob Squarepants, I'M READY!

To get us all thinking happy thoughts about the upcoming season, here are some photos I took last Spring at my favorite plant nursery... sigh.

Foxgloves

Decorative Yard Mushrooms

This has been another Something to Look at Sunday!
Be sure to check in tomorrow for my interview with the author of The Secret Year, Jennifer Hubbard!

Fanged Friday

Mystic Falls 1864

Katherine: Damon, pretend you’re hurt here in the middle of the road in the middle of the woods in the middle of the night and we’ll wait for some unsuspecting coachman to approach and I’ll show you how to suck their blood. This will be fun! Who’s hungry!?

Damon: I uh… I…

Katherine: Kiss me.

Damon: But there’s man-blood all over your face. Let me wipe it off.

Katherine: Kiss my bloody mouth or I’ll kill you right now!
Damon: Well, when you put it like that…
-----
Present Day
Ben: Why did you choose me? Out of everyone to turn, why me?

Anna: Because I needed your help, and I thought you were cute.

Ben: Kiss me.

Anna: Ehh… I said I thought you were cute. But your usefulness has since proved, well, useless. You haven’t even found the witch’s spell book.

Ben: I’m not useless! That witch, Bonnie, is totally into me. I’ll seduce her and kidnap her and you’ll have your book!
-----
1864
Damon: Stefan, look how gracefully I can pull off the look of this time period. But you…

Stefan: I know! My eyebrows are too dark for my hair color and these high-waist trousers don’t do anything for my figure.

Daddy Salvatore: Cease this bickering now! Damon, you are such a disappointment.

Damon: Thank you, father. Now I will spend the rest of eternity trying my hardest to prove you right.
-----
Present Day
Damon: Look in my dazzling eyes. Can I trust Stefan?

Elena crosses fingers: Of course you can trust him. And your mind tricks won’t work. I’m wearing Essence of the Toxic Flower.

Damon: But you must admit, I am dazzling.

Elena: Yes… I’ll admit to that. Dude! You just grazed my boob!

Damon: Hey, I was just trying to get to the sink! Accidental boob graze!

Elena: That was not accidental.

Damon: Kiss me.

Elena: Darn! Stefan is here. Just… hold that thought.
-----
1864

Stefan: Why is Katherine writhing on the floor?! How did that happen?!

Daddy Salvatore: I’ve been feeding you the toxic flower! I knew you were a Vampire sympathizer! Where have I failed?

Stefan: Well, your first mistake was buying me these awful pants!

Daddy Salvatore: Burn the vamps!

Anna: No!

Emily: Shhh! I will protect them! One day, you and Damon will release them from their tomb!

Damon: This is all your fault, Stefan! I will never trust you again! For as long as we both shall live undead!

Stefan: Ditto!
-----
Present Day
Stefan: For the past 145 years, I’ve lost my brain and trusted Damon again and again. It’s never turned out well. He's just so much smarter than I am.

Elena: Dang. I forgot you were that old. That’s kind of gross.

Stefan: We must recover the spell book buried with my father. I know my legs can run faster than the eye can see, but my arms can’t seem to wield a shovel quite so quickly.

Damon: Well lookie, lookie. Give me the spell book, Stefan, or I’ll snap her pretty neck and you and I will both have a new vampire girlfriend. And BONUS, she looks just like our ex lover.

Elena: I am so SICK of hearing that! Can either of you just love me for ME?!

Stefan: Fine, Damon. Take the silly pink book and release your ex lover. You get Katherine, I have Elena, and we’ll both be happy.

Elena: Stefan, you saved me!

Stefan: He wouldn’t have killed you. He loves you. You look-

Elena: Like his ex lover, I KNOW. Kiss me.

LOST, Contests to Enter, and Other Stuff!

Well, let's just get the LOST conversation out of the way. I was disappointed, yet I don't know what I was expecting.

Hubby and I had dinner at my parents house, then settled on the couch for three hours of LOST goodness, only to yell at the TV during every break for commercial, "STUPID!!!" I really don't know what I was expecting... certainly not two alternate realities. Certainly not a near opening shot of the island UNDERWATER for who knows how long (very poor CGI by the way). Certainly not Desmond on flight 815 and then suddenly he's NOT on it anymore... Certainly not a soap opera return to the living by Sayid. Certainly not a cryptic message from Juliet beyond the grave, claiming that the hydrogen bomb worked. Even though in one reality we see that it DID work, all of their lives are still going to pot anyway, and in this life, Jack and Kate won't be together and that's just TRAGIC!!!!! (At least they brought Boone, nka Damon from The Vampire Diaries, back!)
And I've heard from interviewed cast members that they still don't even understand how it's all going to tie together, so I'll be patient. :::Taps foot until next Tuesday:::

January was a pretty good start to the New Year. Got quite a bit of writing/revising/agent research done, kicked my butt in gear and got a personal trainer for 3 sessions, and finished these books:
Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris 3/5
The Secret Year by Jennifer Hubbard 4/5 (Interview with author coming soon!)
Gallagher Girls #1 by Ally Carter 3/5
Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater 5/5
Truly, Madly by Heather Webber 4/5

Thanks to Natalie Murphy for the Over the Top Award!!!
And Thanks to S.B. for the Happy 101 Award!!

Meeting Elizabeth Gilbert!

And yes! I DID get to meet her!

Lastnight's Elizabeth Gilbert reading event was incredible! What a story she has... what a platform. There were around 800 people in attendance, and even some men! She laughed and said, "There are men here! How did that happen? Are you sure you're at the right event?" Then she went on to tell us about an experience early on in her published career. She was doing a reading at a bookstore, and one person came. Here's basically what she said: "And it wasn't even really that he came... he was already there. He was the creepy guy that's ALWAYS in the bookstore, in the back by the human sexuality section. He saw 40 empty chairs and he sat in the back row. Not knowing any better, I read to him. He raised his hand. 'Yes? You in the back?' 'Can you speak up?' I thought, can you MOVE UP?! Should we go to a bar instead?!"

One thing in particular stuck out to the writers in the crowd. She stressed for us not to let an idea sit for too long, or it will leave the room. The idea will go visit another writer and say, "Will you write me? Because that one over there just isn't getting to it." And before you know it, someone else has written your idea. It's not that you'll forget about it completely, but the essence of it just drifts off... you waited too long. Interesting thought. Gilbert is working on something right now, but after this tour, she wants the summer off, and will start writing in October. She keeps trying to pacify her idea by writing notes when she gets a chance saying, "See! I'm working on you! Don't leave!"

Gilbert has quite a sense of humor, is a great speaker, and such a gifted writer. She read the first chapter from her new book Committed: A Skeptic Makes Peace with Marriage. I'm excited to keep reading. It sounds interesting.

Review of Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert

Since I am going to an Elizabeth Gilbert reading event this evening, I thought it would be fitting to review one of her books.

Eat, Pray, Love - One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia.

Description from Goodreads:
"By the time she turned thirty, Elizabeth Gilbert had everything a modern, educated, ambitious American woman was supposed to want - a husband, a house in the country, a successful career. But instead of feeling happy and fulfilled, she was consumed with panic, grief and confusion. She went through a divorce, a crushing depression, another failed love and the complete eradication of everything she ever thought she was supposed to be." "To recover from all of this, Gilbert took a radical step. In order to give herself the time and space to find out who she really was and what she really wanted, she got rid of her belongings, quit her job, left her loved ones behind and undertook a year-long journey around the world, all alone. Eat, Pray, Love is the chronicle of that year. Gilbert's aim was to visit three places where she could examine one aspect of her own nature, set against the backdrop of a culture that has traditionally done that one thing very well. In Italy, she studied the art of pleasure, learning to speak Italian and gaining the twenty-three happiest pounds of her life. India was for the art of devotion, where, with the help of a native guru and a surprisingly wise Texan, she embarked on four months of austere spiritual exploration. Finally, in Indonesia, she sought her ultimate goal: balance - namely, how to somehow build a life of equilibrium between worldly enjoyment and divine transcendence. Looking for these answers on the island of Bali, she became the pupil of an elderly, ninth-generation medicine man and also fell in love in the very best way - unexpectedly." A memoir of self-discovery, Eat, Pray, Love is about what can happen when you claim responsibility for your own contentment. It is also about the adventures that can transpire when a woman stops trying to live in imitation of society's ideals. This is a story certain to touch anyone who has ever woken up to the unrelenting need for change."

My Thoughts: For the most part, I enjoyed this book. Having never really been around divorce, I found reading about hers somewhat hard to relate to and emotionally draining, but I kept reading because of her writing. And because of the countries she traveled to over her year of starting over. Italy. Oh, how I am in love with Italy. I soaked in the third of the book that detailed her explorations of the country, the eating of the amazing cuisine and gelato, the kind friends she made, and I even learned a few new Italian words. Her humor and insight through these chapters is amazing. The middle section, India, I struggled to get through. It took me literally weeks to read this section. It was a difficult learning experience for Gilbert. Imagine living at an Ashram, learning Sanskrit, meditiation... then imagine reading about someone else doing it. India is where Gilbert had her big "ah-ha!" moment, but reading through it drained me. Indonesia started to pick up again. Her descriptions of Bali and the people she befriends are incredible - you want to be a part of it. There is romance, there is betrayal... It's exciting! At the very end, Gilbert updates us on the people we've gotten attached to through the book, which she also does on her website.

Critiques: This book is not for the faint of heart. There are serious adult situations she deals with (a toxic divorce), language (in English and Italian!), but the story as a whole is incredible.

Look for the movie coming out this year starring Julia Roberts as Elizabeth Gilbert!

I hope to have some things to share with you tomorrow about the reading, and hopefully I will have met her! We'll see!
